Just like the father, the mother can influence the development of a young boy in a negative way. As discussed earlier in Indigo Boy, the mother often sees her young boy as a "replacement" for his father. All her energy is focused on her boy and he almost becomes a replacement "lover" for his father. She shares secrets with her young son and in the process often tarnishes the boy's perception of his father. The head of the baby without eyes in my work "In my Mother's Hand" is empty inside. Without being literal, this is often the result of the mother stripping her boy from his positive attitude towards grown-up men. For many years the boy and eventually the young man struggles to regain confidence in his father. This is especially the truth in the case of gay men who are very close to their mother's. The father is often seen as "the enemy", or at least as a bad father.
