On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, a scheduled commercial passenger flight from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina, was ditched in the Hudson River adjacent to Manhattan six minutes after departing from La Guardia Airport. While on its initial climb out, the Airbus A320 struck a flock of Canada Geese, which resulted in an immediate almost complete loss of thrust from both engines. All 155 occupants safely evacuated the still virtually intact (although partially submerged and slowly sinking) airliner from which they were quickly rescued by nearby watercraft.
Although the work Flight 1549 was inspired by the above, the incident itself merely sparked the title. Flight 1549 mainly investigates memory, loss and personal devastation, and how we learn to dance again.
